Dog’s coat has become discolored all over
We have a German Shorthair Pointer. We have had previous dogs of this breed before. We noticed that sometimes their coats can become slightly discolored–especially the liver colored portion when they lay in the sunshine. However, recently our present dog’s coat has become discolored all over. The white portion of her coat seems to be turning almost a yellow or ivory color, as well as the discoloration of her liver-colored areas. Since we haven’t had that much sun lately, we are ccncerned that this might indicate something else. Is this alright? Thank you.

Certainly sunburnt hair can be discolored and we do see this commonly at the shelter in dogs who love to sun themselves. However, we always check these dogs for metabolic and hormonal diseases. I would recommend some blood tests to rule out thyroid and adrenal gland problems. Certain nutritional problems can cause coat discoloration, so make sure nutrition is optimal and not minimal! Dr. B.
