We have a 9 yr. old cocker spaniel. He is constantly licking at the underside of his tail and butt. The skin now has a black/blue color to it. He has been checked for fleas and anal gland problems. The vet has ruled both out. As long as he is on predisone 2mg./day he is fine. The problem then is loose bowels and how will the predisone long term affect him. Any other suggestions as to what this might be or what we can do.

Due to the response to prednisone, I suspect an allergy. Try Heska testing for both foods and environmental allergies. You could then avoid any foods your dog is allergic to and use their desensitizing serum to treat the other allergies.
