We lost our 10 year old female Rottweiler in May 2013 (osteosarcoma). Ever since she passed away, our other dog, a three year old Rottie (also female)seems depressed. She has always been a very energetic and happy dog but now she just wants to lie in her bed all the time. She’s not sleeping, she just looks up at us with sad eyes.
We take her to the beach, dog park, walks, Petco etc. but it seems as though she doesn’t want to go anywhere these days. She used to run out and hop up into the Jeep like a crazy dog whenever we said “Bye Bye.” She’s not even interested in backyard play time.
Her eating & drinking habits are unchanged and her demeanor is just as sweet and gentle as ever. Could she be depressed and/or grieving for her playmate? Should we consider getting a second dog?
We are retired and someone is usually home with her all day. Other than her companions illness/death, nothing has changed in the household. We got her as a pup, about 8 weeks old, so she has never been a solo pet.
