DIABETES/CATARACTS
My bichon/poodle was diagnoised in Sept 2010 with diabetes. She is on insulin 5 units in the morning and 4 units in the evening. She now has cataracts and has hardly any vision. There is a surgery for removing the cataracts but it costs about $4,000 here in Calgary, Alberta, CA. My question is whether to do the surgery or not. I understand that dogs adjust to being blind. I think it more difficult for me seeing her this way than it is for her. She is 9 years old. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Most dogs with diabetic cataracts do not have surgery. Since no lens is put in place, the vision is rudimentary after surgery anyway. You are correct that dogs adjust to the loss of sight well. Diabetics are also a higher surgical risk. It is difficult for me to encourage this surgery.
