coughing and gagging

Hi Dr. Brown, I am so confused about what is going on with my cat. He is a 2 1/2 yr old ragdoll and it all started a couple of weeks ago. He had developed a little laryngitis and then it woould sometimes sound scratchy and hoarse, maybe for just 2 days or so. Maybe a day or so after that he would cough and gag like he was trying to bring up a hair ball. It was happening everyday so I changed my litter which my vet advised me to do. It was fairly a new litter I had changed too. In a day or so the coughing and gagging stopped, so I thought problem solved. The litter was a natural wood litter. About a week after that it started again and it was happening everyday, once a day. I had xrays done and they were normal. It just recently stopped for 2 days and then it happened again today , lasting about 10 seconds. His tongue was slightly sticking out . It sort of looks like he is trying to vomit or spit something up. There is no saliva. He is eating, drinking urinating, and moving his bowels normally and playing. Can the laryngitis have caused this, are they somehow related? I am getting his heart checked this week to rule that out. Could it be asthma? He is not wheezing or anything when he runs and plays. Seems to happen mostly when he is relaxed or just walking around. I am at my wits end. Please help me. Any advise?
