Cortisone, is this a good idea

My cat has had chronic sores in the mouth for a few years now. My veterinarian has done a number of teeth cleanings and followed with antibiotics, this helps for a while but the problem then returns. My vet now wants to use cortisone, is this a good idea

This is a common problem we encounter at the shelter and it is frustrating. These cats need a complete work up, including lab work, X-rays and cultures of the mouth. Keeping the teeth clean is imperative and often require cleaning 3 to 4 times per year. Using antibiotics on a “cyclic” basis is usually necessary. We are having moderate success with a drug called zithromax. Cortisone is often required to give these cats relief. If used, frequent monitoring with lab work should be done to detect any problems quickly. Quality of life and comfort are the central issues here. We should not withhold cortisone for fear of potential side effects. If cortisone enhances quality of life, it would not be fair to withhold its use. Have your veterinarian discuss the potential side effects and decide if the risk is acceptable for the degree of discomfort. If it is, monitor your cat carefully for these side effects.
