chronic renal failure

My question concerns the diagnosis I just received on my nine year old springer spaniel regarding chronic renal failure. He just had a blood test and a urinary test that confirmed it. He had a blood test last year and was fine.Is he able to have a normal life as long as he has the medication and prescription food?
