Brittle fur
Hi Dr. Brown,
Two of my three chihuahuas have developed dry or brittle fur only on the top of their backs. They are 11 yrs. old and the one without it is 8yrs. old. They’ve had anal sac problems in the past so I’m hesitant to add fish oil. Is there anything else that may help? I’m guessing it’s due to age. I moved their flea med under the neck but it didn’t help. Thanks!

We use hemp oil to supplement the skin and coat. A chihuahua would receive about 1/4 teaspoon daily. A diet change may be in order as well; such as salmon and potato. You should also consider having them tested for a thyroid problem. An under active thyroid will cause dry and brittle hair. This condition is easily treated with a thyroid supplement.
