Most admission committees are looking for well rounded students who have personally explored veterinary medicine to an extent that the student is sure they want to pursue the field as a lifelong passion. High school should be filled with science classes and extra curricular work that may include working at a veterinary office, volunteering at a local animal shelter, or working in any animal related industry. Consider riding with a large animal ambulatory veterinarian to see that aspect of veterinary medicine. Do not ignore other interests as well; the arts, sports, and community involvement. Once in college pursue a major that will include the prerequisites for admission into veterinary school. I attended UC Davis, their requirements for admission can be found online. The process of application include academic achievement, experience, letters of recommendation, and personal narrative. Being strong in each category will help ensure admission. Competition is keen and not all can be admitted; do your best and have a back up plan.
