A hot spot is a skin infection. The hair needs to be clipped away from the abraded area and the surrounding normal skin. The area then needs to be cleaned with an antiseptic and a topical antibiotic applied. Some of these dogs must wear a special collar to prevent chewing of the wounded area. Many need oral antibiotics to resolve the infection. This is difficult to do at home without veterinary assistance.
